City officials broke ground this week on Timbale Terrace, a new affordable housing complex which will replace an NYPD parking lot in East Harlem.

Located at 101 East 118th Street the mixed-use development will include 341 residential units (including 97 for homeless residents and 30 for transition age youth) in addition to the 20,000-square-foot Casa Belongó Music and Arts Center, which will provide education and performance space.

“Affordable housing is the foundation of a rich, diverse city where all New Yorkers can live with dignity. Timbale Terrace shows what’s possible when we use public land to meet public need," said Mayor Zohran Mamdani in a news release. "By building deeply affordable homes across the five boroughs, we are making New York City a place families can afford to stay and thrive."

The project, identified by the East Harlem Neighborhood Rezoning Plan in 2017, was the subject of a 2019 request for proposals. That search yielded the project team of Mega Development, LLC and the Lantern Organization, with Belongó as a cultural partner.

Urban Architectural Initiatives is designing the 14-story building.

Completion of the $225-million project is expected in 2028.
