A vacant city-owned site in the South Bronx could be redeveloped with affordable housing and neighborhood amenities, per a news release from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

The subject property, which spans just over 23,000 square feet at 1388-1400 Stebbins Avenue, sits between East 170th Street and Jennings Street. Surrounding sites are developed with a mix of single-family homes and small multifamily residential buildings, while nearby commercial corridors along Southern Boulevard and Boston Road are home to grocery stores, churches, daycare centers, the Bronx Music Heritage Center Laboratory, and the New Horizons Plaza Mall

Additionally, the site is located near the Freeman Street and East 174 Street subway stations, which are served by the 2 and 5 lines. The Bx11, Bx17, and Bx21 bus lines also sit within walking distance.

The first community workshop for the project is scheduled for June 15th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Community School 134 George F Bristow.

“Our projects are stronger when we work in partnership with the community. I encourage New Yorkers to share their vision for affordable housing and amenities on the Stebbins Ave site, so we can deliver the best outcome for the South Bronx,” said HPD Commissioner Adolfo Carrión Jr. in the news release.
