Last year, at the urging of Governor Kathy Hochul, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey paused plans for the $2.1-billion LaGuardia AirTrain to review different alternatives for connecting the airport with mass transit. A press release issued earlier this month by the Port Authority offers a look at some of those options, which include bus routes, subway extension, light rail, ferry service, and "other emerging technologies."
Check out the alternatives below:
New dedicated bus rapid transit line along Astoria BoulevardPort Authority of New York and New Jersey
New dedicated bus rapid transit line along Astoria Boulevard to Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard StationPort Authority of New York and New Jersey
New dedicated bus rapid transit line to Northern Boulevard StationPort Authority of New York and New Jersey
Narrow tunnels with electric vehicles, fixed guidway with group rapid transit or personal rapid transitPort Authority of New York and New Jersey
While little has been disclosed regarding the price tag and frequency of service that would be offered by any of the alternatives, Streetsblog notes that the final alternative - "emerging technologies" - would appear to open the door for something along the lines of the Vegas Loop, a tunnel network built by Elon Musk's Boring Company below the Las Vegas Convention Center. The 1.7-mile system, designed to exclusively run Tesla vehicles, had yet to meet its goal of moving up to 4,400 passengers per hour as of late 2021.
The LaGuardia AirTrain system, which was championed by ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo, called for the construction of a new elevated guideway connecting airport's Delta Airlines terminal and Willets Point - not unlike one of the subway extensions now under consideration.
