The curtain has dropped to reveal a quirky, deconstructivist community space for Arts and Activism at 156 Rivington, replacing the long-term home for ABC No Rio, who will continue to maintain a presence is the radically transformed Lower East Side, as they have been since 1980.
The four-story articulated-screen clad structure is designed by Paul Castrucci Architects, for a client team that includes NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC Economic Development Corporation and the foundation ABC No Rio itself. Hunter Roberts is the General Contractor for the 7,500-square-foot space.

The new home will eventually contain gallery space, offices, darkroom, print shop, zine library, computer lab and a rooftop garden. On the exterior, a notable planted-facade, with a single protruding window window nook at the 4th floor zine library. The structure will adhere to passive house design principles aligning with ABC No Rio’s environmental political activism.

Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
