Construction is set to begin next spring on 2 World Trade Center, where American Express is set to locate its new global headquarters.

The 55-story, nearly 2-million-square-foot skyscraper, located at  at 200 Greenwich Street, is the final commercial building to rise at 16-acre campus in Lower Manhattan. The project is being developed by Silverstein Properties on land owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey under a long-term ground lease, and is set to begin work this year and open in 2031.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the tower will feature more than an acre of outdoor amenity spaces, including landscaped terraces and gardens with skyline views. The fully-electric development is targeting LEED certification.

“The evidence keeps building: There is no better state than New York to do business. From flagship corporations to small businesses, we are seeing employers plant their flag in our state for generations to come,” Governor Hochul said in a news release. “Building 2 World Trade Center will bring another iconic skyscraper to Lower Manhattan, create thousands of good-paying union jobs and provide billions in economic benefits to New Yorkers. Thank you to American Express for doubling down on your commitment to New York and to partners at the Port Authority for getting this deal done.”

Construction is expected to generate more than 2,000 union construction jobs and 3,200 total jobs citywide, with an estimated $5.9 billion economic impact for New York City and $6.3 billion statewide. American Express, which will have up to 10,000 employees in 2 World Trade Center, will remain at its current headquarters at 200 Vesey Street until the new tower opens.
