The Port Authority and the FTA have announced the signing of the final environmental impact statement for the $10-billion replacement of the Midtown Bus Terminal.

“Signing the final environmental impact statement brings us closer to finally replacing what’s been a commuters’ nightmare for decades with what will be a beautiful, efficient new bus terminal that will be the world-class gateway our region deserves,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole in a news release. “A magnificent new Midtown Bus Terminal will knit together New Jersey and New York to create an even stronger, more economically vital and easily accessible region.”

The 2.1-million-square-foot replacement terminal, intended to meet commuter growth through 2050, would include new ramps connecting to the Lincoln Tunnel. Plans call for closing 41st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, creating a new main entrance, adding new street level retail, and a large atrium at the building interior. Additionally, the project would enable the creation of 3.5 acres of new publicly-accessible green space by decking over Dyer Avenue.

Construction of the bus terminal is expected to occur in phases, with a temporary facility and new ramps becoming operational in 2028, and the full project completed by 2032.
