At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 11, city officials celebrated the opening of new affordable housing near Soundview Park in the Bronx.
The Casa Celina development, which caters to older adults, consists of a 16-story building at 1001 Thieriot Avenue, featuring 204 apartments for formerly homeless seniors and seniors earning up to 50 percent of the area median income level. The complex includes a mix of studio and one-bedroom units.
The complex also includes a fitness room, a community space, a laundry facility, and a rooftop terrace deck.
“Casa Celina brings affordable homes to the Soundview community, thoughtfully designed with older adults in mind,” said Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer in a news release. “With an array of gathering spaces, a beautiful roof terrace, a library, and services provided on-site by JASA, Casa Celina is ready to welcome hundreds to their new homes. With 30% of units specifically for our neighbors exiting shelters, this development will provide much needed support, community, and care for over 200 older adults in New York City.”
The $113-million building, which is part of the Justice Sonia Sotomayor campus, was developed by Xenolith Partners, LLC and designed by Magnusson Architecture and Planning.
