On April 27, NYC Health + Hospitals, the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and Comunilife broke ground on the second phase of a new affordable housing complex on the NYC Health + Hospitals Woodhull campus in Bed-Stuy.
The $41.5-million project at 171 Throop Avenue, named the Comunilife Throop Residence, will feature 93 apartments, including 56 units of supportive housing 21 homes for extremely low-income seniors, 15 general low-income units, and one super's unit.
Set to open in 2024, the project follows the initial Woodhull Residence at 179 Throop Avenue, which was also built by Comunilife. That project, which debuted in 2019, includes 89 affordable and supportive housing units.
“In the Housing Our Neighbors blueprint, our administration committed to an array of bold ideas to create more safe, stable homes for New Yorkers,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a news release. “Today, we’re seeing how NYC Health + Hospitals, HPD, and other partner agencies are collaborating to change lives by giving more New Yorkers a place to call home.”
The project, in additional to housing, will include a community room, a computer room, and a laundry facility, as well as a connection to the adjacent Woodhull Residence.
The project is being built on land owned by NYC Health + Hospitals and set aside for development through a 99-year ground lease. Funding sources include HPD's Supportive Housing Loan Program and Low Income Housing Tax Credits.
