Traffic deaths 'disproportionately impacting' the Bronx: Report "The study found that, while the city as a whole was not on track to surpass the number of traffic deaths in 2021, the Bronx was still seeing disproportionate numbers of traffic-related fatalities. The study said this year’s traffic death count in the Bronx was already higher than any year since 2014, when former Mayor Bill de Blasio launched Vision Zero with the goal of addressing the problem." Op-Ed | The city’s housing blueprint is incomplete without ending housing discrimination "For years, New York City’s elected officials and agency leaders tried to address New York’s homelessness crisis in a silo, separate from the city’s housing plan. As a result, we saw fewer housing options for those in most need and a growing number of our fellow New Yorkers without a place to call home....In reality, it is impossible for our City to tackle the housing crisis without a clear picture of who is homeless. In addition to the close to 50,000 people in Department of Homeless Services shelters, we must include women and children in domestic violence shelters, teens housed by Department of Youth & Community Development, New Yorkers in Housing Preservation & Development shelters. It is also impossible to combat homelessness without addressing how the criminal legal system serves as an underlying barrier to housing. Without this full recognition of the ways these challenges intersect and diverge, any response to the crisis cannot be as effective as it could be." (amNY)
Brooklyn Supreme Court tosses lawsuit against Gowanus rezoning "In the decision, Melendez wrote, first and foremost, that the lawsuit was not filed within the statute of limitations required by law. Richard Lippes, the attorney representing Voice of Gowanus and the other petitioners, filed the suit with the court in late February, but did not serve the city with the papers until late April — after even the built-in extended service period." NYC Subways Still Aren’t Prepared for the Next Big Storm: Report "While the MTA has installed seawalls and flood walls throughout the subway, it also spent $350 million on inflatable flood control devices that have to be manually deployed before a storm. They do help prevent water from seeping into the street-level vents and grates scattered throughout the system, but they have to be installed a full 12 hours before a storm." (Commercial Observer)
