Construction underway for first phase of big Edgemere Commons development

In a ceremony held last week, Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams marked the start of construction for the first phase of Edgemere Commons - an phased redevelopment at the former site of the Peninsula Hospital Center in Far Rockaway, Queens.

The first component of the project, a $100-million affordable and supportive housing complex, will consist of a 17-story building featuring 194 residential units. Plans also call for 23,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space - which will include a supermarket - as well as 24,000 square feet of parking for residents.

"This project represents a much-needed investment and a critical new resource for a community that deserves it," said Adams. "With not only affordable homes but also public and retail space, we are making the best of this land and bringing safety, prosperity, and good health to hundreds of New Yorkers."

The housing will include designated units for adults experiencing homelessness, as well as adults with developmental disabilities. Planned amenities include a community room, a recreation room, and a roof terrace and outdoor activity space.

The initial tower of Edgemere Commons, which is being developed by The Arker Companies and Slate Property Group, is the first component of an 11-phase scheme which will bring 2,050 affordable and middle-income apartments, open space, new medical facilities, retail, and parking to the former hospital site.
