Plans to turn the former Park Savoy Hotel into a homeless shelter can finally move forward, New York’s highest court ruled Thursday.
Located at 158 West 58th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, the 150-bed shelter will sit back to back to luxury supertall One57, where condos are currently selling for an average of $4,647 per square foot. The new shelter will also find itself in the company of numerous other Billionaire's Row towers.
The plan to build the shelter was first announced in 2018 by the De Blasio administration and was immediately met with opposition from neighbors. Locals quickly coalesced to stop the city initiative and filed a lawsuit claiming the Savoy was structurally unsound and should not be used as a shelter.
As the NY Post reports, a lower appeals court previously ruled a hearing should be held to confirm the building's safety and welfare standards, but the state appeals court dismissed that recommendation Thursday and yielded to the city's findings that the building is in good repair.
“We appreciate the court’s affirming the city’s determination to provide New Yorkers experiencing homelessness with shelter at this site and look forward to opening our doors at this location as soon as possible,” said Department of Social Services spokesman Isaac McGinn told the Post.
