Plans were filed with the city on Wednesday to raze a 102-year-old Midtown building, clearing the path for what will likely be a new 60-story tower.
The site at 1710 Broadway, located between West 54th and 55th Street, is currently owned by Extell Development (also developing supertalls Nordstrom Tower at 217 West 57th Street) and C&K Properties.
Extell acquired a 39 percent share of 1710 Broadway back in 2015 from C&K Properties, which at the time of marketing touted the site's potential for a 1,000-foot tower that would blend up to 370,000 square feet of retail, hotel, and residential use. The site's bustling location, just north of Times Square, would also warrant the creation of a digital billboard. This fixture, they projected, could reap the new owners several million dollars more in rent annually.
According to Patch, no new construction permits have been submitted, suggesting that the pursuit to realize a 60-story skyscraper has not changed, and this week's filings, executed by an Extell executive, called "for full demolition of the former Ford building."
The six-story, 83,000 square-foot office building now on-site was originally constructed in 1919 as Ford Motor Company's Midtown showroom and joined several other dealerships on the stretch then known as Automobile Row. Tenants that followed Ford have included the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union, and Bad Boy Entertainment, Sean Combs's media company. The building is not landmarked.
