The 20th annual Tribeca Film Festival will be the first in-person film festival in North America since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a flurry of press releases this morning, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that beyond the festival running live, Radio City Music Hall will host 100% capacity for the event (for a fully vaccinated, non-mask required audience) and there will also be simultaneous outdoor and online film screenings.

Cuomo commented, "Having Radio City back at 100% without masks, with people enjoying New York and the New York arts, is going to be not only symbolic and metaphoric, but I think is going to go a long way to bringing back this state overall.”

For the first year ever, the Tribeca Film Festival is presenting its “Borough to Borough” screening series which will show the films, free of charge, on a 40-foot state-of-the-art LED screen in all five boroughs. Here is a map of those venues:

Former mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies (which is partially sponsoring the event) said, “The Tribeca Film Festival was born out of tragedy, helping our city recover from the attacks of 9/11. This year, the Festival is once again sharing the joy and creativity of the movies as we rebound from a difficult time.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical, In the Heights, will open the festival by being shown in all five boroughs simultaneously.

One of those locations will be the Hudson River Parks’ soon-to-open Pier 76. Located at West 38 Street and 12th Avenue, the 5.6-acre site and structure as a police department impound lot but has been inactive for 20 years. The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation began a partial demolition of the 245,000 square-foot facility but will leave intact part of its steel support structure creating a cool, industrial pergola.

The Tribeca Film Festival runs from June 9th through June 20th.
